Architectural Masterpiece in a Prime Location This neo-Gothic cross basilica was designed by the famous architect Pierre Cuypers and named after the poet Joost van den Vondel. Cuypers – the architect of, among other things, the Central Station, the Rijksmuseum, and dozens of churches throughout the Netherlands – developed Vondelstraat as a project developer. He considered the Vondelkerk his most beautiful church, not only in terms of architecture but also because of the ideal position of this church in the middle of the Vondelstraat community, for which he designed the houses. It says enough that after completing the street, he himself lived in one of the houses overlooking the Vondelkerk.

Choose Heritage The Vondelkerk dates back to 1872 and was a well-visited church for a long time, also known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, named after the Catholic parish that preached there. About a hundred years later, due to secularization, the now severely neglected building faced demolition. A plan for repurposing was developed. A foundation established in 1980 enabled restoration and new use, allowing this beautiful building to stand to this day. Part of Stadsherstel's repurposing plan is to convert parts of the church into office space. The enchanting central space is available for rentals.
